If You’re Worried About Someone Else

You do not need to wait until you are certain that someone is suicidal or in crisis before asking for help.

If you are concerned about someone, you can contact a crisis service yourself for guidance about how to support them.

If appropriate, ask the person directly and compassionately whether they are thinking about suicide or harming themselves. Take statements about suicide or self-harm seriously.

If you believe there is an immediate danger to the person or someone else, contact emergency services or bring them to the nearest emergency department when it is safe to do so.

Creating a Support System Before a Crisis

You do not have to wait until things become unbearable to seek additional support.

A personal support system might include:

  • A licensed therapist, psychologist, psychiatrist, physician, or other qualified healthcare professional

  • Trusted family members or friends

  • A local crisis center

  • Community mental health services

  • Support or recovery groups

  • Faith or spiritual-community resources, if meaningful to you

  • Domestic violence or sexual-assault advocates

  • Substance-use and recovery services

  • A written safety plan identifying people, places, resources, and strategies you can turn to during difficult moments

Reaching for additional support is not a failure of personal or spiritual growth. Sometimes the most supportive next step is recognizing when a situation requires a different level or type of care.
